Just For the Record

As of August 11, a group of eight or ten Canada geese started flying back and forth around the neighborhood in the evenings, honking on their way from wherever to wherever. What? Is summer over?

For what it's worth...I have heard that the ancient Chinese used to say that autumn began in the middle of August...that was the true change of season...so from that observation the geese are right on time.

Also, remember your latitude.

It seemed to turn to autumn here on Aug. 1. Even though we still have 99 degree days, the nights are very cold, and there's an autumn quality to the light. I heard a robin mrping in the shrubbery yesterday--a sure sign; they visit in spring and fall--and the world just feels like fall.

yup. the light is cast so differently now and the air feels different in early evening. i noticed the changes a week or so ago. within 2 weeks it will be fully gone! by labor day we are always into early fall here. considering the lack of sunshine this summer it is hard to let summer go. we are finally having a few warm days, and i hope they will be enough to ripen a few tomatoes. we have yet to get ONE red one off the vine! summer arrived late and even after it arrived we had a relatively cool season. and so it goes this far north in western washington.
